Daily Care

Daily Care

We are going to introduce some topics about Daily Cares of tortoises.

         ●SCL and Weight

Let's check the Tortoise's SCL and Weight

One of the point of view which we can take care easily is taking tortoise's weight and SCL(straight carapace length). There is a famous graph which name is "Jackson Ratio" .This graph is used only for
   ●Testudo hermannni
   ●Testudo graeca
   ●Testudo ibera
We can use this graph to check that the tortoise can hibernate or not .

 But I think ,if there is a graph of which we can know the average relationship between SCL and weight of each species of the tortoise, we can check the condition of our tortoise's health easily.
Each species of the tortoises has different proportion of there body hight and length. Then I think it is difficult to use only one graph to every species of the tortoises. There is a good method of computation for "desert tortoise".

(L×W×H)×0.66/1000=ideal weight(Kg)(within 5〜10%)
     L:Length of carapace(cm)
     W:Width of carapace(cm)
     H:Height of tortoise(cm)

 But I don't know the method of computation for another species of the tortoises. Then I make it for HORSFIELD and T. graeca and T.ibera.
It's needs SCL and weight of your tortoise.
At first, I collect as many data of SCL and Weight of Horsfield and T. graeca and T.ibera as I can. Then plot the SCL to X-axis and the Weight to Y-axis. From the gathering, I calculate the approximate function of them.
I approximate it to Y=aX^3 .
Then make it's graph and verify it.

graph of SCL and Weight

 I collected all these data in Japan. All tortoises are in captivity in Japan.

The result is as follows.
HORSFIELD
Y=aX^3
Y=Weight(g)
X=SCL(cm)
a=0.23〜0.24

T. graeca and T.ibera
Y=aX^3
Y=Weight(g)
X=SCL(cm)
a=0.18〜0.19

 From the result of this calculation, I think the figure of "a" is rather smaller than that of the tortoises in another country. Now I don't know the reason. But I think the data are more, the reasult will be more pertinent.

Then please send me the data of your tortoise's "SCL and Weight".

I want more data. My E-mail address is samacha@st.rim.or.jp
